600 SEL 92 slipping transmission
I have a 92 600SEL with an intermittent slipping in top gear. Only does it sometimes. Today it did it after 2 hours of driving of which half that time was at about 60-70 miles per hour. When you are cruising on the gas gently, it is fine, but try to give it power and the gear slips. All other gears good.
Also, changing from R to D is slow to respond. It does almost all the time. Sometimes if you go to drive off and if it has not properly selected D then the gear tends to slam in.
Is this simply a case of low oil, needing a service or some other common sign of something major please.
Car has a 94,000 miles with a good service history before my purchase but I do not know what has been done to the trans.

Hopefully changing your trans filter and new ATF will stop your problem. If it does not you may need a rebuild.

Try This
Had the same problem 98 S500 put a bottle of Lucas stop slip believe it or not it work. It's holding me over till I can put a tranny in but I am at 305k n still going strong, hopefully your issue is minor at those miles. I researched the product and checked out consumer reviews I suggest you do the same make your own decision I'm just making a suggestion. Hope this gives you a little direction hope all goes well for you.

Thank you for that tip..... The car is going in next week to have a look at and I have asked the shop to do a trans service. I will mention what you did and perhaps will try that too. I will post the outcome here but that will not be until the week after next as I will be away on vacation. I will let you know. Best regards, Rodd

slaming also called shift shock when shifting to D or R check vacuum pressure, adjust the vacuum box with an aid of pressure gauge if persist, your inner clutch and reverse (K2) drum/crown spring retainer may be worn out, slipping is commonly cause by worn out or burn inner and outer clutch disc and may need replacement. Continues use may cause more damage. I have diagram and PDF file for this subject e mail me.
