S Class ABC System and Shock-Strut

Hello:

I have an '01 S600. The rear drivers side "sank", suddenly, for no apparent reason, yesterday, all the way to riding on the tire. The failure was not accompanied by any noise, leak, pot-hole or any thing other then driving at 50 mph on a flat, straight road. The full, red, ABC warning light came on. The power steering works perfectly. No noises. The resevoir is full, although the fluid smells like burnt transmission fluid. I pulled the wheel on the bad corner, and opened the bleeder, slowly first, and then all the way. Nothing came out, which is confusing me. How do you bleed the ABC please?
Also, the shock / strut on the rear drivers looks as though it has a pneumatic feature to it as well. What is this for (other then the obvious) and which feature, the pneumatic or, the hydraulic, on the shock/strut, keeps the car "up" please?

Thanks, Tom

P.S. - I took a 5" block of wood (as per a post/photos of another past-post from this site) and blocked the lower A-Frame between the frame. The car sits correctly now, drives fine, the ABC light went out and, although a bit bumpy, the car is drivable until I can get it repaired. A 5" block and a couple pull ties should be part of the tool kits ...
