Depends on who and how many owned it. Check the maintenance records. If the car had one owner who took good care it will last another 150. If not may be a lot of headache you dont need.

i am the 3rd owner of a 97 s420 with 167000 miles. even tho im the third owner of a car with 167k miles the only problems i have is wear and tear. its all about how the person before u took care of it. my car runs better than my fathers garage kept 2nd owner 98 500 with 90k miles.

Pretty much the engines in the W140s are bullet proof! It is all of the other stuff that will kick your butt!
Check the Neumatic central locking system. I went through the whole system for around $2500. Check the suspension, does it have the hydraulic suspension option$? That kind of stuff. The Bose radio amp is $2000 from Mercedes! A $199 on ebay. The most important thing for owning one of these big mercedes is finding a shop that can keep it alive if your not a do-it-yourself guy.
If it checks out, you will become addicted to the comfort and luxury that a W140 with any engine gives. I budget $2000 a year for fixing things.
Good Luck!

Yes service can eat you up,if car was not cared for,I bought mine used and have 40,000 miles with it no problems. However I fix things before things break.Like my air conditioning quit blowing cold air.I bought a recharge kit and its fine for over a year.Mine does not have the hateful hydralics.there is special shocks if you want to delete them.Other than brake pads, and changing ATF fluid, and oil,no problem. If your S280 comes with no dipstick for transmission buy one.
Now E Class I've seen nothing but trouble with them. Its always a non engine parts that go bad.
