Looking at a 1998 S420

I'm looking at a very beautiful 98 S420 that I can get for incredibly cheap price due that it has problems with the transmission. It shifts first and second gear, but it won't shift after that. I was wondering what could that be the cause of and perhaps is it a cheap fix? Also what is the transmission model in it, since I have a spare transmission from a 1998 c230 that I'm thinking to swap? Any help will be appreciated. Also is there anything specific to look for in those cars when buying, since I've never owned an S-class and problems from the C would be different than the S I guess. Thank you

There is no such thing as a "cheap fix" on a W140!

Spend the money on a PPI at a dealer and they can tell you what it cost to fix among the other things that might be wrong.
