1999 S500 Grand Edition (vs 2005 S600 Sport)
Hi all,
I just saw a 1999 Grand Edition S500 recently that has 100k miles on it. Been thinking about getting rid of my S600.
Curious what people think of reliability of the S500. My S600 still has Fidelity Platinum so all the costs are covered, and i still feel like it's an amazing 500hp car, but I only drive it like 7k miles per year.
Would the S500 be reliable? My experience w/ MB has been awesome for my 2001 E55, 2006 CLK55, 1995 E320 Cab, pretty good on my R500 and several E320 wagons - but not as good on my 2002 S55.
Thanks in advance.
Patrick

1999 S500 Grand Edition
I have a Grand Edition. The car was completely misrepresented. I had 2 S420 W140 cars prior to that that were mint condition cars.
I believe that it will be as reliable as your S600 less the V-12 expenses. Mine has the rear hydraulic struts which I believe your 600 has as well. Stay away from the self leveling cars and it should no more expensive than yours to maintain.
Mechanically my S500 has had all of the normal issues with suspension and pneumatic locking system. Pretty much all W140 cars eventually need work those systems. My other problems are a result of abuse and neglect which you can weed out when you purchase it. If you get a Grand Edition, make sure that the interior pieces are not missing and in good condition. Getting replacement floor matts is impossible and the wood is very difficult!
I would recommend staying with the 600 if it is running well and does not need work. My 500 gets about 14mpg in town and 19mpg on the highway so no real improvement there either.
Good Luck,
Mark

Sold the S600 V12TT a while back and now enjoying 07 E63 and 06 CLK55 cab, but still have the itch of the W140 and the solid doors/windows...checking out a 1998 S420 tmrw - wish me luck.
P.S. The 2013 GL450 V8TT is a nice car, but it just doesn't feel that solid, imho, and I'm glad I'm only taking over the last 6 months of my friend's lease.
