Headrest Problems

Hello,
My dad's 500 has a problem with the headrests in the front, they worked perfectly up until a few days ago when nothing happened. When i press the button to make them go up i hear the motor working, but the headrests move not. Is there anything i can do short of taking it to my mechanic, or even worse, the dealer?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You'd have to take a look at the mechanism that raises and lowers the headrests. Maybe the ratchets are broken or something. I think my friend's 320SEL has the same problem.

I had the same problem with my S320 1994. It is very simple to fix. Just take off the back panel of the seats and take a look at the mecanism. you will see that at the bottom of the supports of the support of the headrest there is an alongated whit and blue plastic part. That is probably what is wrong. Good luck.

There are two screws at the bottom part of the back panel of the seats, one on each end. Just take them off and release the panel. Good luck.

I opened my seat back and found out the plastic roller which roll up and down the headrest is broken. Just order parts from MBZ dealer (cost about $22.00), it is fairly easy job to replace it. The parts come with roller and rail together.

:p

When I purchased parts, the parts manager told me there are several different part number depending upon your VIN. My part # may be not useful for you. You have to look at your VIN and browse through parts diagram on their computer to specify the part you need. AS fas as I know, driver side is different from passanger side.

Good Luck.

Great! You need a 140 970 00 26, they are the same p/n for both seats and there is one per seat. Retail for the pair is around $40.
