The deal with the shifter knobs on 140s is that MB changed the design half way through the 1995 MY. The old type is permanently affixed to the shift lever, whereas the new type uses a bayonet mount and removable/changeable shift knob.
You can retrofit your ride with the new shift lever, available from the dealer and some aftermarket shops like Performance Products. The MB part number for the new shaft is 140 267 05 01 and usually sells for less than $20. Since changing the shaft is only slightly more complicated than changing the old style shifter, there is little additional time investment.
