95 s420 transmission needs complete rebuilt
Hi, I have s 1995 s420 and need a complete transmission rebuilt. The car has 176,000 miles on it and this is the 1st time that the transmission required attention. I have quotes of upward to $3000 dollars to rebuilt it. Is this reasonable and given the mileage I have on the car, is it worth to spend that kind of money? Thanks in advance for any advise you might have.

Out Of Control!!
It's all opportunity costs--do you need the car?---do you have 3000 cash?--if you answer yes to either question, then you have answered you own question!
You indicate rebuilt--do you mean yours or are they going to supply you with another transmission that they have said is rebuilt by others.
And third, will your shop install a transmission that you find!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have the money and no I don't really need the car. I guess I 'm just questioning the economics of spending $3000 for a car that really is not worth that much more.

The proposed cost of the rebuild is reasonable, and like Plutoe stated it is a personal decision whether you want to continue to invest in the car or purchase an upgrade. The W140 is a great car, but the cost of repairs and maintenance can be extreme. A well maintained model is a joy to drive and can provide many years of enjoyment.
I would make my decision based on the following
1. Do I plan on keeping the car (love the model, sentimental, etc)?
2. Can I purchase a similar model or upgrade (W140 S500 or S600, W220+) to a model in the same or better shape for the cost of the repair?
3. What is my annual budget for maintenance, and does the repair exceed my three year budget plan?
Good Luck!!

Thanks everyone for the reply and advice. I've decided to donate the car to charity. It is just too much money to spend on a 22 yr old car. I will probably be looking at the plug-in hybrid market for my next car.
