Intake mod help please

I have removed the air boxes on my 600SEL and replaced them with K&Ns, what are the 2 sensor / relay looking things that were in the front of the airboxes and what should I do with them?

they are probably temperature sensors. are they thin wires or thick tubes? you can just zip tie them down to something nearby, most probably nothing important.

On a more important note, have you gotten a chances to test out performance? i'd like to hear the results

They are most likely either intake air temp. sensors or MAS sensors. Either way, they are VERY important or else they wouldn'y be there right? YES. What do they look like?

I am pretty sure they are "air temperature sensors" I have zip tied them to the rails below the filter. I'm still not quite sure of there purpose...any insight would be welcomed.

As to performance after the mod, I wont know until Friday. It was raining and miserable yesterday and I am out of town this week. But as soon as I run her I will leave a report.

Be careful with the K&N s I have heard real issues if they are slightly over oiled, they will mess up your sensor for about $400. The technical director of the MB club posted this opinion and considered a "expert" on MBs.
I am averaging 2 calls a week about ruined MASS AIR FLOW sensors because the owner switched to a K&N air filter that uses oil as a filter medium.

Bosch (mfr of MAF sensors) advises against these type filters. The oil mist from the filter eventually "poisons" the MAF sensor, causing expensive diagnosis and repair bills. MAF sensors can run $300 to $800 depending on model.

Also - the K&N units I have seen have considerably less filter area than the OEM filters used on MBs. K&N may work for lesser cars like Fords or Chevys that have small air filters, but MBs typically have much larger engine air filter area than the K&N. and will not benefit from installing a smaller filter.

If MB thought these things made sense they would be using them. The 600 is considered a gentlemans racer not a hotrod. Paper filters were a break thru in the fifties, It might be louder, but performance? most pro racers use paper...
I know some of the opinions will be flying around, therer are tuners who will put umph in your car. (1) first gear start instead of second (2) aggressive chip (3) exhaust system, and lots more from RENNTECH and AMG

I have heard that, thats why I use the K&N imitation one time used filters b/c they don't come with the oil but still have that cotton fiber medium. hope that helps.

My apologies, I should have said K&N style. The ones I bought are not oiled. I probably would not use them on an everyday driver but as this is just a toy for Friday night dinner trips I am not too worried. I have used these "Cone Filters" on other vehicles with no problems. On the other hand if you think I am crazy and have just been lucky so far, I will seriously consider putting the OEM's back on.
