W140 S280
Advice on a 1995 S280

Gday gentlemen,

I've been looking for a weekend car for the past year or so; an affordable, DIY-able luxo barge.
Passed on a mint 87 Cressida a few months back (it was the rear leaf-spring setup that really let it down) and firmly think the W140 is the final, be-all end-all choice.

Have spent the last 2 months doing extensive research, looking up and passing on several W140s.
However today there was one that ticked nearly all the boxes I wanted with regards to price, area, color and owner profile.
The only box it doesn't tick is the "96 and newer" one, so am seeking some advice here if it's worth a shot all things considered.
I've yet to view it in person - planned for this weekend - but here is the information the seller has provided so far.
  • 1995 W140 S280
  • 366,000 KM
  • 2 owners, full service record though not all were done at MB dealers
  • Gearbox overhauled
  • All 4 corners suspension replaced
  • Aircon condenser (not evap) replaced
  • Well-kept (always parked indoors) original paint

I understand the general consensus is there's a pre-95 and a post-95. However 95s themselves seem to be a bit of an odd mix.
eg. This one has the old aircon buttons and hydraulic 4-speed, but it also lacks the reverse antennas, has the 95+ door panels, newer wheels and digital odo.

My concerns in more-or-less order of decreasing importance are as follows and I'm hoping someone can add to it or correct me if I'm wrong:
  • AC evap hasn't been replaced - major concern
  • Hydraulic 4-spd box - more reliable than the electric 5-spd? (I've gone through most of Mava and Joe's transmission rebuild threads)
  • Wiring harness replacement unknown - was it still a problem in 1995?
  • Vacuum pumps haven't been replaced - can DIY replace
  • Older AC controls - will this be a problem?
  • No OBD II - to still consider buying SDS or are detailed self-diagnostics out of the question?
  • Rust situation unknown, but it's not from a coastal state and we don't salt our roads here (hot/humid year round)
Also, the car itself aside, I've yet to discuss in-depth if it's good for a W140 to only be taken out once a week (sometimes once every 2 weeks).
My relative has a W211 that only does a weekly run and has no issues but I'm not sure if a W140 would be more fussy about sitting that long.

Of course I fully understand the commitments in such a machine's regular maintenance and upkeep, the only thing I'd like to avoid would be major rebuilds.
Really crossing my fingers and excited about taking over a grand old dame like this one. Any and all advice appreciated.
