Need help on 400sel
Hello all
This past month I've acquired a relative real low mileage 400sel....my new project car.
I would like to know a couple of things about this car. First I know this car was equiped with a vacuum system to close doors and trunk of vehichle, for sme reason it doesnt seem to be working. I've checked all the fuses, but still nothing....any ideas? The second has to do with the radio. The radio seems to be malfunctioning......I get real bad FM reception, and AM reception seems fine. The volume control when raising and lowering volume....produces loud pops through speakers.
any suggestions would be appreciated.

For the Radio: I think your amplifier is fried. You are probably better off buying a new headunit because the factory amp is over $1000 as I was told when mine broke.

The 140 body cars had "closing assist", the pump resides over the drivers rear wheel, it is a weak link on those cars. If you pull fuse 9 in the trunk it should reset the system, if the pump does not sucessfully close the trunk or doors after three tries it disables the circuit. The pump also could be fried!
Cracking and popping from the speakers can be a bad "BOSE" amp but if AM works it is not the issue. The tuner sits at the base of the drivers rear wheel, and is controlled by the "head unit" in the dash. I would go to "Beckers" web site and locate a local dealer/warranty depot for an opinion. I had my amp, tuner repaired for $600. There are 11 speakers with a 7 channel amp and lots of wires. Becker does offer a replacement radio with CD and cables to adapt to your system. Replacing everything is your last option!

I concur with Peter, bad FM reception is not likely the radio. You may find the info in this thread of interest"

Thanks everyone for replying.
As for the doors and trunk, the vacuum assist does not work on any of them. I will try the fuse number #9 to see if it resets. If I recall the fuse panel I'm looking for is in the trunk on rear passenger wheel well. Now if the pump does not reset, is there some place I can get a replacement pump, and how difficult would it be to change out?
As for the Bose issue, I'm not to sure if the amp is taking a crap. I was listening to it the other night, It seemed to be working fine as long as I didn't mess with the volume control. I'm starting to suspect a bad head unit, or a bad volume button on the head unit. What do you all think?
Again thanks in advance.

400 help
I think it is #9 or 10 on the trunk fuse box, have not gone thru the "drill" lately. The pump is pricey $600 and up, be careful of e-bay someone could sell you their defective one, and claim "it worked for me"! They work for months and then fail, if it is out of a wreck it could fail! I am on my second, MB paid for the second after many years, over time they got their money on other various repairs. The brushes fail in the motor, amongst other things!

OK I've checked all the fuses and I'm having no luck on the pump

Any ideas as to where I can locate the pump in the car, and where I can order a pump, other then ebay?

Radio system from MB year models 91-93 are quite different from 94-up. The BOSE amp in your car is a 7 channel with the radio divided into a head unit in the dash and the tuner and amp in the trunk.
I had my Bose 7 Channel Amp in my 92 400se serviced by http://www.soundrepair.com/html/vehicle.htm in Florida. It's very easy to remove and send to their location. The company specializes in repairing this model amp. Mine works great now. The repair cost me $440 to have the unit.

PSE Pump
Contact George Murphy at Performance Analysis Company for the rebuilt door closure pump. He can be reached at 865-482-9175. George is National Tech Director of Mercedes Club of America. I bought a rebuilt pump from George.
