You really should use only Mobil 1, MB recommends it. My friend uses 0w-40 in his S600. Or the yellow cap 5w-40 Mobil 1 Delvac would work; Walmart has it as truck and suv oil. Or the red cap 15w-50 should work also. Now as to when it needs changing that is up to you, you can't go wrong with 3k but that is kind of short for Mobil 1. I would say 5k miles if you want to go further get it tested and see what the lab says. My Mobil 1 15w-50 came back perfect after 3k miles in my diesel!

Truly speaking, all modern lubricants are top quality, and have advanced significantly over the past decade. Personally, I use synthetics for even superior wear protection, top lubrication, and minimal degradation, and good detergent qualities. Regardless of which oil you use, it is most important to use proper oils for the driving conditions and ambient air temperatures. Overall, use lighter oils in newer cars with tight engines, in the winter, for maximum fuel efficiency and horsepower. Use thicker oils if your car is older/higher mileage, for better protection, and in summer conditions. Regardless, the S-class V8s use about 8-9 qts of oil, and due to the sheer quantity of oil used, the oil does not degrade as rapidly. You can safely change oil at 5000 or even 7,500 miles, or even once a year. But remember to change the oil based on weather conditions. A winter oil can work in the summer, but a summer oil is NOT recommended in the winter.

I use Castrol Syntec 5W50 in the winter, and a modest 10W40 and 20W50 synthetic blend (I blend it) for the summer. I prefer the thicker oils to the lighter ones. I use this in all my cars. Another cheaper option is a Shell Rotella synthetic 5W40. Shell is used in Ferraris, and is good enough for my MB. IMO Mobil zero weight is simply too expensive, but someone has to pay for the marketing!!!

My pop is running moble 1 0W-40. I've heard many people say that mercedes only recomends that for gas mileage. Next time, we'll switch to 10W-40. As for winter oils, unless your in a place where it gets very cold like canada, sticking with 10W-40 or 15W-50 should be fine.
