92 500SEL Tranny Questions

Can anyone please help me in identifying the type and operation of A/T in my '92 500 SEL? It doesn't have any Sport/Economy switch. It has P->R->D->3->2 and a 'B' to the left of '2'. You can supposedly 'lock' the tranny in '2' by moving it left into the 'B' slot.

When driving the car, it feels like it only has 2 gears active - 2 and 3. Worse, every upshift from 2 to 3 results in a drop in RPM sometimes causing the car to lose momentum. The ratios are far apart. Shifting from '3' to 'D' doesn't make a difference. Is 'D' a regular gear (it's missing) or an overdrive gear that will engage on higher speeds?

Other than this, tranny shifts are smooth and quiet. Fluid change done regularly. Thanks

think of B as first gear

when in D, and begin to accelerate, your car starts in 2nd, goes to 3rd and 4th.

when you put in in B, it goes to first gear

particularly helpful if you wanna pull a 6.5 second 0-100 run in case the car beside you is being a jerk and rolling back and forth thinking he could smoke you with a 4 banger and a loud exhaust

Sounds like your 4th gear clutch pack has bit the dust.. In other words, time for a new trans. 4th is not an overdrive in this car, it's just a 1-1.

There are quite a few rebuilders out there, just be Sure you use an MB specialist. I know a fellow who took his 300SE to a local "Tranmission Shop" here in Atlanta, it's been 3 and half months and he still doesn't have his car back.....
