Transmission not shifiting well COLD

When I first start my car, the transmission seems to shift well (into its second gear) but after warming it runs smooth and gentle. Any suggestions?

try synthetic transmission fluid such as Redline ATF-D4 transmission fluid, its probably the best ATF out there, Royal purple is also very good. It is smoother in all conditions and is much more fluid like in colder conditions / startup.

It is common with the W140 5 speed to have a long hard shift from 1-2 from what I have read. There is not harm in changing the fluid, it mayl help relieve some of your worries and smooth out the cold shifting

even the 4 speed does too. fluid will make a substantial difference b/c normal tranny fluid is like molasis so it doesn't flow nearly as well as a high performance synthetic like Redline ATF - D4. just thought i'd mention that.

Its perfectly normal for the transmission to ride in 1st and 2nd for a short amount of time, the transmission holds 1st and 2nd to warm up the engine.
