Post W221 model info

Found this article on a car website. Thought you guys would be interested:

Jaguar is readying its all-new XJ, BMW has just launched the new 7-Series, Audi's new A8 is coming up shortly, and not to be left behind, Mercedes is already working on the next-generation S-Class, although the current version is still relatively new. The W221-Series range will make its public debut at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, and a CL coupe version will follow a year later, but in the meantime, we can reveal a number of details.

This car will remain the same length as the current model - so as not to intrude on the Maybach's territory - but its wheelbase is to be extended for greater interior room, creating shorter front and rear overhangs. There will be significantly more space in the rear (especially important for the chauffeur-drive market) and access will be easier thanks to larger rear doors. Inside, expect all the latest 'toys': multi-contour seats, developed from those in the new E-Class, an electrochromatic glass roof, Night Vision, a top-spec Bang and Olufsen audio set-up, full multimedia facilities including Bluetooth wireless telematics, the COMAND driver information and communications system, with a control console in the middle of the steering wheel, and radar-operated speed-sensitive cruise control, emergency braking and even the ability to communicate with other cars fitted with the same system, to warn of road conditions ahead. To support all these systems, the S-Class will have a 42-volt network, incorporating a 12-volt starter-generator to run the climate control system effectively from start-up.

Engine-wise, the line-up will consist of direct-injection petrol and diesel units, with the petrol engines featuring the CGI (charge-stratified injection) technology about to make its debut in the new CLK range. They will be V8 and V12 engines, including a 500 bhp bi-turbo V12 similar to that in the Maybach, although giving a different output, and the transmission options will include a six-speed 'auto box. Keeping all that power under control will be the latest incarnations of Mercedes' armoury of electronic driver aids, and fast-cooling ceramic brake discs (which are so large, they need to be accommodated by 19- or 20-inch wheels).

The styling of the new S remains sleek and elegant, although design features reflecting both the Maybach and the upcoming GST (Grand Sports Tourer, the MPV/4x4 hybrid) are incorporated. The headlamps in particular will resemble the Maybach's, and the high, pronounced waistline is similar to that of the GST's.

As this car is still a few years away, Mercedes will make minor modifications to the current range, probably this autumn. Keep an eye on 4car for more details.
