Comand Removal

Hey Folks,

How does one extract the Comand unit? I already have the two "keys", but I assume that the wood trim needs to be removed first to expose the slots?

When removing the wood, are there specifc areas to pry it away?

I have removed MB head units and climatronic units before, but the key slots have always been right on the front.

BTW, I have thoroughly searched the forums and could not find instructions on how to remove the Comand unit aside from the necessity of using the keys.

Thanks for your help, these forums are terrific!

The keys you have are not for removing command but for removing your instrument cluster. Open your ash tray and you will see 2 screws under there. You first remove those 2 screws which will enable you to remove the wood trim. It just pops out. Once the trim is removed it exposses the remaining screws needed to hold your command in place. Remove those and just slide your command out. Let us know if that helps you.

Thanks, Ken, I thought those torx screws looked suspect!

BTW, I thought the keys came into play, becasue I used them to extrace the Comand unit from my 2002 E320 Wagon.... Oddly enough the keys for E320 Comand are slightly different than the traditional radio keys.

Also, you previously posted information on the ball joints, and your advice was right on.

Mucho Gracias!

Working on some phone/iPod mods, and need to do some initial discovery. My existing brick phone is just too old.

BTW< I would love to replace it with a euro unit that has TV, but Steve K (mbenzNL), said they haven't seen any of the older D2B style Comand units for a while.

There have been many threads, here and elsewhere, dealing w/ what I think you may looking for. One of them is here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/foru...start=1&fid=36

Hope it is okay to post that here, but it has much more detail than any I could find here.

i've already looked into installing an ipod in 2002 comand 2.5, but i dont think its possible because there is no way you can enter into AUX menu on the comand itself even if you were able to wire it. if you do find a way, please post.
