Rear Fog Light
The fog light on just one side is a European practice. The sensors that tell you that you have a light out are set up for that, and the sockets are different from left to right for the fog light position vs the non-fog light position (socket 4 in the diagram at post #5, http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w220...-problems.html).
One might be able to run an additional wire, as the member suggested - and put the fog light socket in place on the side that does not have one - but I have no idea what that might do to the bulb continuity check system. I also don't know if the circuit board is the same, left to right.
Here, as you point out, emergency blinkers are often used in dense fog.
