Rear Fog Light

Has anyone ever modified the rear fog light to work on both sides as opossed to just one side? I will try this tomorrow. Why does MB only give you one sided lamp anyway? Makes people think you have a blown bulb and they like to let you know about it.

They put it on onse side because if it was on both, it would make it look like you were braking all the time, and that could create a hazardous situation.

They have to comply to German legislation, which will only allow one offside rear fog light in order to prevent any confusion between brake lights and fog lights. In Germany if during the annual vehicle examination test both lights worked then it would fail the test.

I hate that too, which is why I never use my rear fog lamp.

From: Edmonds... good bye SD
do a write up when you complete this... good mod for < 5 bucks...

back in the day... we used to wire the turn signals to stay on (dim) as racer lights... i imagine its about the same... just get a socket that houses a 1157 rather than 1156 bulb, wire it in with a jumper wire from otherside....?

Yes you do. Manually turn your headlights, pull once to turn on front fogs and twice to turn on rear fogs (or is it fog????)

Ok, mod complete. 1 minute total time. The rear lighting harness has seven pins. On the driver side all seven pins are wired while the other side only has six wired and one missing. With a 14ga wire just tap the fog light wire (in my case it was the second from the bottom) and on the other side plug it in the unused pin hole. Oh, I forgot to say this: "Kenstdudios is not liable for any errors during this simple install or running your rear fog lights in this manner. Any mods are done at your own risk." I just had to say that.

bahahaa!

I always read the manual whenever we buy a new car. I like figuring out all the stuff, and later explaining it to my parents. Makes me feel smart for a while.

I do read the manual, but not word for word and page for page. That would take hours.

Oddly enough, Audi seems to have both rear foglights populated with lamps, and both illuminate when the rear fogs are on. BMW does not even have rear fogs on U.S. models.

My library of manuals came in three volumes and several hundred pages of detailed diagrams, drawings, and other information (tons of minutia). No way anyone is going digest all of that even after several readings! They should provide Chapter tests.

I just read my manual about the rear fog light. Very interesting. The manual also says:

"The rear fog lamp, dimmed, will act as a replacement lamp, if the bulb in the inner left-hand taillamp stops working"

Son of a gun, another feature I didn't know about.

Audis and Land Rovers all have both lights illuminated. The rear right lamp is supplied in MB but not wired. That's weird. We'll I dont have to worry about that now that I have both sides and it looks uniform.

Can someone explain to me the process of running the wire and adding a pin to the wiring harness in detail. How would I add a pin? I would like to both of the rear fog lights connect. I never use the single because it looks so silly. I was thinking I would hook up the passenger side and only use them in extreme weather.

Actually, if you use the fog light--as intended-- only in dense fog or blizzard or downpours it is not silly at all.

The best protection against getting tail-ended.

I understand that. It still looks funny to have one side on. I have read these threads. No one is looking for others opinions. Just looking for answers to the questions they asked. Why people feel they must put their two cents in is beyond me.

My question was how to make the other side work.

If you can't answer that then please don't respond at all. I'm not interested in what you think is silly or your opinion.

I don't think most of the members are interested in your opinion of their responses, either. Frankly, while you may be entitled to your opinon about their responses, you have no business telling anyone not to respond. Doing so will greatly lessen the interest anyone here may have in helping you.

Daytime: Slow and easy with 2006 SL500 & 2003 S430 . Night time: Hard and Fast with my wife
I learned a long time ago that no questions are stupid (but I take it that some answers may be) .. now, that said , comments are opinions and like beauty, it is in the eyes of the beholder to feel if it is stupid, offended, great, etc... so guys, don't take it to heart. As to fog light, in my opinion it just there to add to your safety.. and if you really want additional safety in my opinoin, in driving rain or dense fog, use your emergency blinkers. The Best way to be seen those conditions: that's my opinion. Any comment ?
