GoldenI,
you said the s350 would be to slow.
your signature has an mL320 in your stable.

the ml weighs roughly 4800 pounds and will do 0-60 in 9.0 seconds. ok it's not going to be referred to as quick but is most situations that is fine. now add some horsepower and drop 700 pounds to go to the sclass 350 and stop pushing a brick through the air. The 275 hp S430 will turn a 6.9. Adjusting final gear ratios a little ( i really don't care about cruising at 140 )
I would guess your in the range of 7.0 -7.5 seconds.
like I said in another post, S350 4matic in the mid -sixties slam dunk. I'd drop a check today.
MB probably won't do it because it puts to much pressure on the e500 price point and that's we they make their money.

a quick thought on accident length.
the long accidents are good, you tend to walk away from those. slow deccelartion
the really short duration ones tend to be fatal or result in very serious injuries.
bad. very high G's.

Well, in the recent issue of Car and Driver I read that Toyota, not to be out done by MB, has also released a variant of PRE-SAFE. Apparently, Toyota's version includes a laser unit that can detect obstructions and calculates from speed, steering angle, etc., whether collision with said obstruction is imminent and/or unavoidable, and from these readings, takes safety measures.
Is a robo-car far behind? When the computer takes over the steering wheel to get you to avoid these things?

Let that be fodder for yet another MB v. Lexus debate! Hah!

BMW has developed a system that will combine knowledge of the car's dynamics with GPS navigation to decide if you're going to overcook the curve up ahead. It can warn you, then cut throttle, then apply brakes for you to help you around that corner. Of course, it hasn't been released in a car, but it's something that they did develop. Shows some interesting applications of combining existing technologies. Not something I'd really turn on in my car, but it'd probably be useful for other markets.

I'm refering to our pro-BMW fan Marauder. Told him I scheduled a test drive, he said he was busy, and then I see him posting! *shake head*

ah krispy,
I apologize for my lack of clarity. I was castigating you for the suggestion of computer control steering the car.
My worst mightmare turns our highways into wire guided computer controlled pathways. The are many mindless automotons, who drive today while reading a paperback, who would cheer at it's arrival.
i enjoy the drive way to much but i fear we'll see it in our lives.

I agree completely on all counts. With the latest "steer-by-wire" technology just emerging, I'm worried that someday my car will "steer for me" when I'm supposedly about to crash. I'm even more concerned about OBDIII, actually. I read a CAr and Driver article a couple of years back that suggested such a system may have two-way communication with the authorities, i.e., would report you immediately if you had emissions issues. The potential abuse of such a system (say, as soon as you've exceeded the speed limit) is just too high for me to feel comfortable.

the s350 will NOT be coming to north america because of fear of poor sales. the last s-class with a v6 if you recall was the s320 and that was a disaster nobody bought because of the lack of power everyone opted for the v8 engine which was at that time a 420 it came in the standard and e-longated wheelbase. most got the longer wheelsbased version. there are alot of these cars around if you want an older model but you already have the e500 on order stick with that.
