switch from 97 E420 to 2001 S500...opinions?

Hi, I have kidlet #2 on the way and need more room, I like the sporty, tight feel of my 97 E420, but need something larger, an am considering a 2001 S500 at a local car lot. Can you guys compare the 97 E420 to 2001 S500 for performance, driving feel, and overall quality / maintenance issues? Thanks, T

The 2001 W220 isn't too reliable. Try for 2003+. I haven't driven the W210, but the S-class will feel larger and lazier. Straight line power is pretty decent with the 5.0 motor.

In 2002 I did the similar. I had a 1999 E 430, which was a great car. In November, 2002 I got my first S Class. It was 2002 S 55 that was a factory press car with 9,000 miles on it. The differences were very noticible. The biggest one I found was the greater number of adjustments and comfort of the front seats and the heat/cool function with massage. In a 2001 the navigation was first generation and looks it compared to the '03 and up. I never had repair or maintenance issues with any of my S class, the E 430 or any other past or present Mercedes I have or had. Mine have all been very reliable but I did hear the 2000 and 2001 S class had some issues that go along with a redesigned model.

If your budget can stand it follow Newton 22's advice and get an '03 or better. An '04 would give you the DVD based nav and the seven speed transmission.
