I would say the 2000 S500. I bought mine new and it is as good today as it was when I drove it off the dealer lot. I've been wanting to trade it for a new one, but honestly don't think I can get a better car--looks and preformance. So why waste $100k on a car I don't like as well?

Prior to the S500, I had a '98 S with very few, if any problems. That car was solid...but had fewer amenities. ...I spent over 7 G's fixing issues with the 2000 S500 after the warranty expired...sad. Not to burst anyone's bubble, but this is what you should prepare for when purchasing a high-end MB. Hopefully the 2007 will put the reliability issues to bed!
I should point out however, that $7k in repairs over a seven year period, on a $90k car (what I paid) is NOT that bad when you look at it realistically. That's only 7.7% or about 1% per year. I will bet that most car owners (Chevy's, Fords, BMW's, etc.) would be VERY happy to be you. Not to burst anyone's bubble, but maybe you just have unrealistic expectations. Could it be?

I think we tend to hear a lot more negative than postive on the 00-02 S-Class because the people with bad experience or luck tend to be really vocal about it and with good reason. It is like in business, If some guy gives you a great deal on a car you will tell a friend or two, If some guy ripps you off on a car you will tell everyone and their mother about it. I personally know 5 people with 00-02 S-Classes that have had no issues either. Maybe because they are Socal Cars (warm climate) ?
