SL 500
Advantage: Very high-end technologically advanced sedan..Comfort, style, elegance, and performance. Features such as Distronic,ABC, keyless go...endless safety features.. check www.mbusa.com for full details.

Disadvantage: Very Costly to maintain, fuel appetite.. Buy new with full warranty or CPO. If you are concerned w/ cost of maintaining i.e. brakes, oil changes and usual wear and tear -- it will be steep. maybe other members can chime in w/ exact estimates..

Do a search , I am sure there are tons of knowledgable members with past experiences.

03 and above seems to have most of those bugs worked out so they are fairly descent rides, very smooth, elegant and spells classy. On the other hand if cost of operations is your concern, then maybe this may not be the route you want to take. Everything about this car is expensive. Oil change as mentioned above if you DIY - $20 for MB filter, 8.5qts of Mobile 1 0W40 @$6.50 a qt. Do the math. If you go to the stealership, they will charge you this plus labor (in most cases $100/hr). This will probably be the cheapest thing you can do with this car so if cost is your concern, maybe you shouldn't buy.

If cost of maintaining is not a problem then MB all the way. Buy close to new as possible and look for extended warranty. Ask for service records and do intensive car fax report. If possible get a mechanic to check before you buy. When test driving, if anything doesn't appear right, stay away and don't buy. It could be the reason the previous owner traded.
