You are in luck!

Talk to your dealer, there is a federally mandated waranty on emission related parts for 8 years and 80k. I too have an 02 S430 and a dealer in Houston just replaced mine for free.

Give your local dealer a call. If you have problems let me know and I'll give you my service dept's number and they'll help you out with the details.

I have this problem which I narrowed down to my cat. where everytime I drive aggressively at quicker speeds there's a bad rotten egg smell that immediately proceeds soonafter acceleration. I took it to my dealership in Huntington about a year ago and they claim they didn't find anything wrong with it. This was when my factory warranty was still good! Now that I have 78k miles I don't have much time left. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do?

i doubt they will do much in re: to bad smell.. a Cat that requires replacement will be breaking apart and blocking flow.. if you hear rattle or notice major lost of performance then they will replace the cat.

Honestly If you are out of the 80K replacement range. I would just install universal cat converters.. You may even get better performance out of the car.. They only cost $70-100 each.

I know people will say stay with MB parts.. but this is a Burn part.. It is all affecting everything that is exiting out of the engine. As long as the upstream o2 sensor is OEM it shouldnt make any difference on brand of Cat used if it is EPA and CARB approved.

I agree. And if you don't mind paying several hundred, go www.evosport.com

Improve the exhaust note while you're at it.

the weather stripping recall is because they are saying the bottom seals on the door is just falling off, and the alternater/voltage regulater is a little piece on the alternater that might cause it not to charge right... thats all i know for now

Recently I've been having a problem with my car shaking pretty abruptly when idle, especially with the AC on. I do know that I've never changed the spark plug (even though I probly should've) but I don't know if this is contrbuting to my problem or possibly the alternator/voltage regulator?

If you're sure that the spark plugs have never been changed, then change them immediately. You're way overdue. I have 33,000 miles I think I'm a tad overdue.

is it a DIY type of job? My friend used to work at Pep Boys and said the computer states it's a 4 hour job?? If it's simple enough I'll do it myself otherwise if I take it to a place I'm looking at like $300 for labor alone.

How mechanically inclined are you?

The spark plug change isn't a hard job, and even if its your first time, you won't take 4 hours (unless you spend the first 2 hours staring at the motor wondering where the plugs are).

I have a 2003 S430 that may need Cats. It has 48,500 miles on it but is no longer on any warranty. Does MB still have to cover my Cats? Thanks!

On my 2001 CL500, I had my right cat replaced in 2006 due to a rattle. At the time my mileage was 36K miles. Recently, the signature rattle noise returned. A few days ago, I had BOTH replaced under warranty as they both failed when tested at the dealership. Current mileage is 50,750. The right one had a service life of a little over 2 years!

I just made the 8yr/80k emissions warranty as it's due to expire this May. I'm told the new cats are covered under the parts warranty of 1yr/12k miles. Hopefully I won't have to worry about them again.

lttk913,
You should be covered under the 8yr/80k warranty if your cats require replacement.

Cats Rattle

Thanks! That is a relief. I just got the car back from my mechanic who was doing another job on it and he told me the rattle underneath was the Catalytic Converter going. He said I would be getting an error or check engine message. Is the rattle definite proof of a defective Cat in that the dealership would have to classify them as defective? I can just hear them telling me that even though there's a rattle the Cats are functional so they don't have to replace them. What if I brought in documentation from another mechanic that the Cats need replacement? I don't trust the Dealerships very much.

For me the rattle is what brought the issue to my attention, otherwise I didn't experience anything at all.

Do they rattle only after the vehicle is warmed up? Have you gone under the car to check for other possibilities? If your mechanic said it's the cats and not a heat shield or something else, then most likely it's your cats. A few taps on the converter will tell you if the internal ceramic comb has fallen apart. The dealer test is a bit more elaborate.

Cats

The Cats rattle as soon as I start the car and thereafter but my mechanic has not looked under the car to do a thorough check. That will be my next step. Thanks for all the info!

Cats

I went to the dealership today and told the Service Manager what the issue was and he told me to bring it in and they'd check it out and replace the Cats if necessary for free. . What a great board this is! Here I was checking out how much they would cost me to replace and I find out I can get them for nothing. Thanks!
