BMW E39
It "reads" the air. Then it adjusts your car's air/fuel mixture accordingly to provide the best possible performance and mpg. If the sensor was dirty or faulty, your car would yield sluggish performance, mpg, and worse, have issues running.
I went O'Reilly auto parts store and bought the CRC MAF cleaner. Sprayed the inside of my MAF and bam! No more check engine light!

He just told you how. Bought the can of stuff, sprayed, no more light.
Not all MAFs can survive a cleaning like that though. Newton was fortunate. A new MAF sensor can be pretty expensive. The MAF is pretty easy to find on the car on the air intake system, and is very easy to remove/replace.
If you think the MAF is the problem, and you are likely to replace it anyway, it doesn't hurt to try to clean it before plunking down the money for the new one. Just be very careful not to damage the very thin gague wire(s) that you will see inside the MAF.
MAF=Mass Air Flow sensor. It measures the volume of air rushing through the intake tube on the way to the engine. A signal is sent to the motor's Engine Control Unit to indicate the relative volume of air per second. The ECU can then blend in the right ratio of gasoline with the fuel injector to mix with that air in order to get optimal power .

I also love to take care of my car. Wash, wax, interior conditioning, change filters, paint calipers, change wheels (for winter), etc. But I take the car to my independent mechanic for more time-consuming service.

Nice Job. good to see some W220 owner getting their hands dirty.
when cleaning MAF. Never actually touch the element. Spray it with MAF or Electronic cleaner once and just let it evaporate. I screwed up a MAF on my BMW by cleaning it once.
Plug should last 100K miles but it is always good to change it.. Time consuming job but straight forward. It would be nuts to let a tech change it at an hourly rate. This is job of a 3rd tier tech at best. Then a 2nd tier tech will help with the difficult plugs with his special tools....LOL.
