You need a BENZ!
30-35k will get you a nice Certified Pre Owned Benz from a dealership. Go to mbusa.com and do a search within that range. Even if you end up with an older S, as long as you have the warranty you are golden.
I purchased my S500 in 1999, and yes, it had some issues. However, all issues were electrical or electronic. No engine or transmission. I now have 70k miles; the car is 10k miles out of warranty and no issues. Will drive it to 100k before I trade it for a W221.
Personally, I don't see an issuse with a young successfull person driving an S--just as long as you don't pimp it out. If you are that worried, go for a CLK convertible (very easy to find in your price range), E-class, or even a C-cheap class. I had a couple of C's (while at the same time having an S, and the C is a good car and has a younger feel to it. But, if the choice was C versus S---S wins, no contest.
Regarding a BMW, Acura, or Lexus--I did a brief stint with each of them--nice cars, but there is nothing like a Benz. And, as far as a Chevy versus a Benz?!?! That would be like comparing the Ritz Carlton to Motel 6.
Buy the Benz and let us know what you get. You will not regret it.

suprised no one else has had a similar response as mine...
why not just keep the prelude.. keep driving dads C class if needed.. and do something better with the 35 grand than spend it on a car you dont need.
