Argh, piece of crap

I think my power steering pump is leaking. Was driving home a few moments ago and along the way, noticed my steering wheel felt heavier than usual. I got home, popped the cap on the power steering fluid reservoir and noticed it was low. Then I took a flashlight and peeked around the pump, and lo and behold, oil around the pump.

I know I shouldn't do this, but I hunted around the garage and found some cheapo brand steering fluid and added a bit in to protect the pump for now. Hope its alright.

yeah the brand doesn't matter as long as it has something. take it in asap. this seems fairly common on S's. We have had a few 00-01 S500/430 that had low steering fluid when we first took them in on trade.

Wow, I noticed the same thing but only in the mornings when its cold. I guess the fluid condenses so i must be low as well. So any type of power steering fluid can be used or is there a type i should get?

yea my pump is going too, the steering wheel is feeling heavy, it was low at one point so i filled it and it still feels the same way, but i recently checked it again and its the same level so its not leaking, i think my rack and pinion is going also, when i turn the wheel all the way to the left to make a u-turn theres a thump half way threw only but only when turning to the left. ill be taking it in asap.

heavy wheel

I noticed that my steering wheel has been a bit heavier than usual.

I thought it was due to either the drop in temperature or the fact that I reset the ECU two weeks ago.

I'll go check the fluid.

Actually, when mine was low on the power steering fluid, the steering was lighter, then it became just right when I added the fluid to the reservoir.

Please post your results on the "thump" noise when you make U-turn if you have cured it thru some method :-) Though not sure, the causes may be the ball joints / control arms / Tie rods.

I wonder what's my car gonna be like when I give a complete overhaul on next year (or next week ) which is - new Brake rotors/pads, Brake Fluid flush, O2 sensors, Control Arms (both side) and Ball joints. (perhaps the engine mounts, too.)

If - IF this does not cure the problem- OH MY.. I would be looking at a new steering rack

Anyways,

Happy New Year!

I am retarded

Ok so I can't figure out where the power steering fluid reservoir is.

I can't find the location of it in the manual and when I pop the hood, can't understand the German.

So any help would be appreciated and yes, I already know that I am retarded.

Right next to your oil filter and under the driver side air intake tube.
