Startup noises, noises, noises! - Normal?

Hi everyone,

I'm so glad I found these forums and I'd love to ask you S-class owners:

My '05 S500 4Matic is making the weirdest sounds - they're creaking, moaning (groaning?) noises that last for 10-15 minutes after we drive the car (after we first starts it). The car also seems to shake quite a bit (can feel relatively heavy vibrations on the dash as we are warming up the car). Even if we let is sit for 5-10 minutes before really driving it. The noises have been there for he past few months. Admittedly, we do not drive it every day (living and working in NYC it's juts not practical!) but still....

Is it normal for this car to sound like this?!? It sounds very...unusual.

I personally love the car but my other half has just about had it.

Any input would be appreciated!

From the way you describe it, it is probably not normal. Care to elaborate on the sounds? Do you have any experiences with a car engine? Perhaps you can pop the hood and tell us more particularly where exact these noises and coming from (or even under the car/near the wheels etc.).

Since you have a 2005, I am going to assume you still have warranty left and say, it is probably a good idea to bring it in.

Why on earth don't you take it to your local MB dealer and get it checked and if needs be fixed? You should never, ever, drive a car with 'weird' noises without having it checked. And ,of course, a Mercedes should not be making funny noises. How you could leave this for months amazes me. And then to expect to solve it here and not at your dealer ...why? It is guaranteed. Get to know your dealer and at the first hint of a problem ask his advice. They have all the diagnostic equipment in the world.

Hi Newton22 - thank you for your reply - No, I definitely don't have much experience with car engines (or for that matter Mercedes cars!). The sound is a low groooooan. I did take it to the local dealer today - a leak in the power steering fluid! So that's the problem - after they added more fluid the sounds disappeared. But that's a quick fix only - we made a real service appointment for next week when they will really have a look. I just never really thought the sounds were indicative of a true problem and had chalked it up to us not driving the car frequently.

We bought the car CPO this past summer - can't believe there's already this problem. That and the left mirror turn signal already went dead (and has since been replaced)!

Dear hawk20, I appreciate your response, I really do, but I am perplexed as to why you think I shouldn't be posting such a problem on this forum - isn't such a venue meant for sharing ideas and asking questions? No, I didn't expect to totally solve the problem here, but since I have relatively limited car knowledge I wanted to be more informed before visiting the dealer.

Anyway, thank you again and kind regards to you both.
