Changed tranny oil at 64,500 miles

On the changing of the tranny oil discussion, I just wanted to share what I found after I had mine changed in the 2001 S55. I had a 20 quart flush, with a new filter and maget. The tranny oil was still a "fairly" good color, but my mechanic said it certainly needed to be changed. The magnet had very little particulate matter, but the oil was on the way out. I watched most all of the procedure, but got a phone call when he changed the maget, so I did not see that. It does seem to be shifting very smoothly, although it shifted fine prior, the seat-of-the-pants "feel" is improved. Could be mental. Total cost out the door was $493, and for my peace of mind, worth every penny.

Just thought I'd share.

A 20 quart flush for $170 with new filter, gasket and magnet?

Lets see:

Filter - $15.00
Pan gakset $15.00
Magnet $12.00

Total - $42.00
Less - $170

Residual for oil $128
$128 / 20 quarts = $6.40/quart

That is a very good price! And no labor for the mechanic or the equipment and no taxes!

I was quoted 2 hours labor, filter, gasket, lock pin and 16 qts of ATF (apparently no magnet in my drain pan but the service advisor assumed my drain plug is magnetized). I haven't added that all up, but I'm guessing an E320 flush would cost just about what it did brianw430.

I seriously doubt that the same thing was only $170 somewhere else.

The oil in my torque converter was not flushed, just in the tranny. But yes, $170 was all I was charged for.

Opinions vary, but a good average is at around 50,000.

It sounds like you had the same service I did Newton except for the flush, here is the breakdown:

"Automatic Transmission Service" - $136.50 Labor

(1) Trans filter @ $14.50
(1) Trans gasket @ $11.00
(1) Lock pin @ $0.70
(4) Trans fluid @ $11.00 X 4 = $44.00

Total is $221.70 + tax so about $235.00

This was done by my dealer. I imagine that AAMCO or places like that could have done it for less, but I'd question the fluid that they used, and whether (or not) they had access to the other OEM parts.

That's exactly what I had done. My dealer wanted around $300, so I went to an independent BMW/Porsche/Mercedes shop.

Yes, opinions vary. Some good reading if you search "tranny" on the forums. I did a tranny service and flush on my CLK55 at 55,000 miles and the tranny oil was even worse than the S55 at 64,500 miles. So will depend on your driving style and possibly in-town or highway driving. No matter, when you have a mechanism with metal on metal working components, you are going to have wear. It seems prudent to refresh in the internal consumables at periodic intervals as regular maintenance.

My entire system only holds 8.5 qts but my dealer uses 16 qts for a complete flush.

If anyone wants a rude awakening, have the tech take a sample of your old ATF and send it to Blackstone Labs in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They send you a sample vial for free, and the analysis costs $20 plus the postage to send it back to them. Once they receive the sample, you receive an email containing a .pdf attachment in about 24 hours. If you like, for no additional charge, they then will mail you a hard copy of your report.

I use an indepedent MB mechanic and he uses 20 quarts for the flush. Actually, he pumps the tranny/converter with new oil until he sees clean/fresh oil coming out the return and shuts it down...this came out to 20 quarts. My tranny does not hold 20 quarts, but as Musikmann said, the tranny was flushed with 20 quarts.

You just need to change the oil 2 to 3 times at about 500miles apart. to flush the system. Its pretty easy if you have the dipstick. MB ATF is $7.99 QT if you phone in order to BMAparts.com
