No, my car has only 22K Mi. on it. But he was working on another W220 with stuck gear shifter when i was getting my B service. He told me it is a common problem on our cars. He changed the whole thing and used his Star Diagnostic machine (same as the dealer one) to program the new part to the cars computer. He works only on Mercedes from classics like 57 Gullwings to new cars like ours.

what do you mean by getting the new part programed?

i thought it was just a case of pulling out the center console and removing the plastic piece. and thats it?

If the ENTIRE shifter is replaced, it needs to be version coded. That has nothing to do with removing that annoying plastic price.

There were no alarm issues you just have to remember not to turn on the ignition with the module unplugged. Once you remove the Keylock cable, you can remove the key with the car out of park while you perform removal of th e module. this saves the hassle of the mfd alarm.

Also, my ever was held in by a little circlip that kept it on the shaft. Maybe that is different than earlier years but I did no have anything to press out.

Third observation was that I did find a part number on the plastic lever. unfortunately the parts guy was unable or unwilling to research the number to find the vendor. I have a friend with a CNC shop, I am going to try to get this piece reverse engineered in a more durable material if it is cost worthy.. I'll keep you guys posted.
Thanks for posting the pictures guys. This was helpful.

Try to order one for your w220 an install it, You'll find out.

The deal is , just about anything ( part ) that is connected to the ECU in terms of information input MUST be version coded on order to operate properly.

The Shifter is an add-on module therefore has ( needs ) to be coded to the system otherwise it may not work properly. Especially the Facelift cars because of the Pre-Safe system.

I didn't bother with a replacement. I removed the bad part and put my unit back together. Been happy since 9-24-07

Hey Guys,

Wondering where to find how to disassemble the cosmetics to get to this part. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Obviously this is a recall item...damn moneymakers at MB. Love the car though!

Thanks,

John

John,

Are you doing this on your S55? If so, is your car stuck in park or is this simply some prevention work?

Guys,
Well, I want to thank all the posters on this thread!

I had the same problem on Jan.06.09 and tackled it by Jan 7.09 in two ways:

1. read this forum (excellent info) - had questions like, how to remove the stick shift handle (twist chrome ring below leather handle and pull up) which I found on this forum. but that didnt get me very far.

2. I found that you could buy the actual manuals online (did a google search) but I needed the info faster than that (the CDs would have been shipped to me). http://www.mercedesmanuals.com/?gcli...FQKHxwodlQ7nPw

3. Decided to go to justanswer.com - that was the best, and most timely investment. I paid two $45.00 submissions to get answers on this exact questions (remove the console, and the shifter itself). www.justanswer.com

Positive Results:

Diagnosis: http://www.JustAnswer.com/questions/1pamg-s430-w220-2000-shifter-stuck?L=T (necessary to check to make sure this IS your problem, I paid)

Console:http://www.justanswer.com/questions/...-remove-center (another user did this)

Shifter: http://www.JustAnswer.com/questions/1pevf-need-instructions-remove-w220?L=T (I paid for this)

Consider my $90.00 at JustAnswer.com a contribution to the community during this epoch worldwide recession.

same thing happened to me this week. Glad I founfd this site. It took the mechanic 2 days to figure out what was wrong with the car- I showed him this website and it was finally cured--as a long term MB owner I am disgusted at the poor engineering in this piece of equipment--there shoudl at least be a failsafe option of getting the car to the shop!

The car is actually stuck in park now in the garage...ive even tried the hammer to get it out of park...ive been unsuccessful....

If I can figure out how to get the console removed, I'll be able to handle it...

Try this, JR - https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...k-problem.html - it tells you pretty much what you need to know. The shift quadrant cover just lifts out (you remove the shifter top first; loosen the set screw, and unscrew it). There are four bolts under plastic covers that anchor the side of the console; they pop off with a screwdriver or plastic pry device. Then, there are two screws near the shifter - remove them and the console comes off (I also suggest removing the bacl of the console, under the rear A/C ducts - it just pries out from the top, on the sides. Once the top is loose, lift it out.

Park the hammer. It won't help.
