Fuel Filter Change

I took my car in to the dealership for Service A and they recommended that I replace my fuel and air filters.

They want $260 for the Fuel Filter change and $135 for the Air filter change.

I looked up the cost of the parts and they are both about $35 each. I can handle the air filter change.

Has anyone changed their fuel filter and is it a big deal to do? Any pictures or advice on this?

I figure it should be pretty straight forward as its a fuel filter. A couple of clamps and I should be good to go no?

The Air filter(s) are about 35 for both and easy to change. The fuel filter is not hard to change and is located along the lower right side of the car at the rear.
If you found one for 35 let me know where because I can't order that cheap. I found them for 49 bucks which is not that far off. The dealer wants 120 for one.

Also remember the dealer charges you $100-150 per hour labor rate no matter how much the parts cost.

Someone have a step-by-step? I bought a Bosch fuel filter in November and never changed it because I don't know how to.

I lifted the car, and couldn't remove the cover. lol

I don't want to against anybody.

It is true that fuel filter is easy to change, IF you have changed it before on any other cars. But, You still have to consider the pressure build up in the fuel line. IF you are doing it at home and using the ramp with hand lights, Please do not take a risk. IF Fuel sprays on the hand light, it is very easy to catch fire.
Get the fuel filter on line about $50 and go Indy shop you ever went and tell them to replace it. It won't take long and it should cost you less than $80 for labor. It is worth to spend that type of money.

You are correct! There will certainly be fuel sprayed when the pressure end of the fuel line is diconnected. I have not changed a W220 filter, however I have other cars with pressured fuel lines and I was sprayed!

Well Duh!! You think these are the only cars that have fuel that's under pressure?? Not since about 1976 dude.. Cut the Actual Techs here some slack would you?? Why didn't you remind us not to use a cigarette lighter to find the filter? That would be useful information also.

I would venture to conclude that if a person has not the C.S. to realize that METAL fuel line could be under a bit pf pressure on a Fuel injected vehicle... Which most cars today are, he shouldn't even try to change a flat forget about the fuel filter job.

BTW.. it's not the fuel but the vapors that ignite.... and if your flashlight is so powerful that it ignites fuel, maybe you should be using a bit less of a light there pyro...

Here is something I found on the net

http://www.techguys.ca/howto/fuel_filter.html

Seems an air filter change might be a simple change. The fuel filter still might be best left to a dealer.

Letsjet,

I respect what you are trying to convey here but..

OMG.. If you try to follow these procedures on your mercedes, you will end up at the dealer for sure..

Depressurizing your fuel system is the way to go if you can't figure out how to remove the filter without gettin sprayed. Its easy on a benz because there is a release on the fuel rail. An should only be depressed when the car is off.

But starting the car and shutting off power to the fuel pump till it runs out of gas?? On a Benz?? can you say 'Check engine light??? You might as well call the dealer and make and appointment while your car is still idling..

This is why some people should just take their cars in for work and leave the maintenance to the folks that know how to do it.

Some of these generic How-to guides should be called how-not-to guides on certain applications.

I have the Alldata DIY on the W220. I will post it up when I get home. Even with the step-by-step (mind you, it was a bit vague), I am paranoid.
