Yes this is a known spot and should be covered. Just take off the plastic license plate insert and ther is most probably more rust to find.

Also check with the dealer and research this forum and BenzWorld for more information on rust warranties.

Rust

I am working with my dealer now.
2000, S500, 109,000 miles.
They told me MB would pays for 50%, I pay the other 50%. But it must be done at the authorized MB shop AND they must fix 100% of all issues, not just the trunk. I have not take it in for an estimate yet.
I told them that this was not acceptable. If MB is willing to pay for 50%, then they are aware of this issue.
Just sent another email today requesting an update. If my dealer cannot get this done, then I requested for the MB contact name and number.

I added that my daughters 1999 Ford Taurus, 140K or our 2000 Pontiac Montana, 125K does not have any rust.

I check with my dealer, no problem 100% coverage on the rust. Stand your ground and push the issue.

It may interest readers of this thread to know that the S class and CL class are built of a combination of aluminium and steel. For the aluminium components there is, of course, no galvanising process.

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1 2003 production onwards.
During the previous quarter (Q4 2002) the process was gradually introduced
on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during
this lead-up period, but not all.

I hope members find this helpful.

I have a 2000 CLK430 with 75,000 miles and an area of small rust bubbles on the edge of a lower panel in front of the passenger side rear wheel well. I thought the rust coverage was only for four years (unlike Audi and other companies that warranty for a lot longer). Is it possible to argue with the dealer on this, or is this just an S class issue?

I've got some small bubbling on the L side, 1/4 panel just above the plastic bumper. Also a few bubbles near the license plate frame.

On a 4 year old, 49K mile car?? Insane.

The dealer better pay 100%!

In the UK the rust guarantee is 30 years.

I'd be very surprised if Mercedes don't put this right. Your habdbook should say how long the guarantee is. But Mercedes have been good at fixing cars out of guarantee, as well.

How have you guys approached the conversation with your dealer? Do you ask them to fix it (and let them think you think its under warranty) and then argue with them when they give an estimate? Or do you go right in and acknowledge that its not under warranty but it should be? Or should I just write a letter to MBUSA and complain about the rust before going to the delaer? What has worked for you?

its a shame ,But I been fighting with them for over 1 year and they kicked me to the curb ,I am the 3rd owner the 2nd had the campaign done (lower door moldings) they said there was no rust then (2 years ago) so I was on my own , I just had my whole car done over , fixed all rust , dents and I replaced front bumper as well ,,I need to bring her back in this week to be finished wet sanded and buffed then detailed but she never looked so nice
