I have seen numerous discussions on comparing models so there's no stupid questions. As far as I know the S600 has 5.5 V12 with 362HP if I am not mistaken. S55 will be my choice IMO, 5.5 V8 AMG Package with 355-360HP, gas mileage somewhere 18 - 23hwy. Two different vehicle with almost same HP.

Since both models were boosted to 493 HP in 2003, either one would be much more satisfying one model year later.

If you go to www.mbusa.com and click on Certified Pre-Owned in the upper left, then pull down Model Overview and select the year, then pull down the year (yeah, you just selected it but the interface sucks) and select S-Class, then on the left select each model in turn and explore all the features, equipment, performance, etc. in gruesome detail. It's kind of cool: all the marketing material for all cars going back to 2001.
