Airmatic relay, problems?

Hello all

Following occured today: Driving for about 20 mins, when i slow down in road cross i can hear the compressor going. Driving 5 more min to home, still running. Even with car shut off; still running. since i knew in wich fuse box relay was supposed to be, i started to pull the relays till it stopped. Relay has part no A0002 542 1319.

After i put back the relay to test it, the compressor didnt start. Then i start up the car and the compressor runs until pressure is ok then turns off.

So shall i suspect that the relay has a beginning failure ?

I am also having problems that the right side back is lower than the left side back. Even when i run the lift switch, the right side does not lift as high up as the left rear side. Could this be the level sensor is bad ? or the calibration setting needs adjusting ?

Since neither the back or the front sinks completely to the bottom with the engine not running over the night i guess i have no air leaks ?

So if someone could help me pinpoint theese problems or give their opinions would be appreciated.

A bad relay will kill the pump due it cycleing too much, so for 35 bucks from non dealer shop. I would replace that in a second... Try that and see if is the issue and do it fast because if you have a leak somewhere you need to get that attention asap.

Just pull the relay in the box, it's black with a # 399 I think if it is the OEM. Replace it just making sure the connectors matchs the holes. Very easy. I just replace my pump, air line and an upgraded relay. $500 including parts. Everything OEM. Upgraded relay is not made by siemens anymore. Now is HELLA. The old ones are very unreliable. one side down? check for the position of the sersor in that side. I believe it is attached to the shock. Otherwise there is a leake. New shock is very expensive. I heard around $1,600. But you need to replace the relay ASAP before the compressor gets fried. If you have a leak you can consider yourself lucky because you burnt the relay and not th pump. In my case, I burnt the relay, changed it and notice I had a leak in the front struts. Pump got fried too. I spend $1,200 total including the pump replacement. Just a joke. No more troubles since.

Hello

I changed the relay, with the Hella one, pump is running a lot less now...
The old relay really buggered the pump.

I am 100% sure since the car stays constantly lower on the right side back at the same elevation all the time, must be a problem with the sensor or the sensors calibration settings, or possibly the valve on the main block is bad.

I am very satisfied i read about the problems with the relay, so that when the pump really started to go for long periods i knew i had to stop it...

Thanks to the forum!

Question

My apologies for reviving this old thread, but I have a question regarding the compressor fuse(s) that needs to be replaced.

My parents' vehicle ('02 S430) recently had its air compressor replaced by the MB dealer. They also replaced the OEM (air suspension) fuse that is in position "O" with the Hella type.

My question is this...does the (secondary air pump) fuse that is in position "N" also need to be replaced since it is the same (inferior) type as the fuse that was originally used for the air suspension?

By the way...positions "O" and "N" are referenced from the Information Page for Relays and Fuses that is located in the trunk above the spare tire.

You should have a fuse location diagram, a sheet of paper sometimes wrapped around one of the tools mounted atop your spare tire. Sometimes owners will slip them into the owner's manuals.

It would help if you had given us the model year of your car; but an '01 diagram is at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w220...e-diagram.html. The fuse boxes are all in the same locations for the W220; but individual relays, fuses and amperages may be different in different years.

Just FYI, the fuse box depicted near the rear seat is behind the passenger side courtesy light for the footwell. The panel pops out. You do not have to remove the seat. However, the relay you need to access is in a engine compartment box.
