Potential Mercedes owner

I'm thinking of getting a used 99 S320 100K miles. I currently have a Lexus LS. By talking to some people who own other luxury cars, they have all said stay away from Mercedes unless you are buying it new, or it is coming with the warranty because repair on them is ridiculous. I figure I should ask Mercedes owners to get their opinions. Now I know everyone here loves their Benz, but can I get a real objective view on this? Considering repair and maintenance costs of a Mercedes, should I be buying a used s320?

Thanks for all input.

I test drove a LS430 before choosing S430 and i love the way merc handles, feels and looks. your second hand S probably is going to break down more often and costs more to fix than a Toyota so get the dealer throw in a free warranty and you are good to go. although i would advise against S280/S320 as they're bit underpowered for such a large car.

As lexus owner also, I would stay away from any mb without a warranty...unless you have the money or don't mind the trouble when it breaks down.

When my 01 S500 with 30k miles was sitting nicely at home since it can't be driven, what did I use to get around and to buy the parts for the S?
My trustworthy 99 GS300 with 145k miles on it

Just because these old mercedes are cheap doesn't mean the parts and service are cheap either

I'm in the same boat (previous LS owner and current owner of other Lexus'):
Plan on spending some money to keep the gremlins at bay on your S320.....

If a warranty is available, BUY IT!

Repairs are very expensive for Mercs - unless you can DIY.

Good luck with your purchase!
