Why Prices of W220 keep falling

I just checked recent dealer auction. It is sad to see the value of W220 is keep falling.

I am targeting mid mileage (50,000 miles) 2005 S55 AMG for $25000 by December 2008.

With recession of 2008 used MB prices even go more lower

The better W221 quality certainly helps to push them down in price. Hopefully the W221 won't drop this bad anytime soon. The W140 didn't get slammed this hard when the 220 came out. I'd still get a 140 before I'd get a 220.

I beg to differ.... IF you look around you see these prices all ver the country.. You just have to stay of those Mercedes CPO lots and you can get a lot of bang for your money...

No saying these prices are dollar for dollar, but the mark-up just isn't there anymore.. 1500 to 2000 net is great for a dealer..
Most of their money is made up on the back end with financing, and the front end with trades..

We are not in a recession! Stop watching the Today Show turn on and watch Bloomberg, FOX Business or read the Wall Street Journal. If we go into a recession it will only be after 2 quarters of concecitve growth. Sorry to burst your bubble.

S600 Prices

Here is some prices I found from Hi Line Dealer Only Auction in Reverside California.

2005 S600V 12G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 30,301 ALB WHT $51,000
2005 S600V 12G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 31,800 BRI SIL $35,000

Following prices for W221.

2007 S550V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 6,752 ARC WHT $71,000
2007 S550V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 17,455 IRI SIL $67,500
2007 S550V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4,754 PEWTER $67,250
2007 S550V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 21,749 BLACK $63,750
2007 S550V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 28,572 ALB WHT $62,000

Some more prices of W220 from December 2007 auctions.

2006 S350W 6G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 32,198 BLACK $32,500
2006 S430V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 17,075 ALB WHT $43,750
2006 S430V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 33,039 BLACK $34,250
2006 S430V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 18,691 GREY $33,000
2006 S430V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 62,370 BLACK $28,750
2006 S500V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 17,161 BLACK $49,000
2006 S500V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 6,036 BRI SIL $46,500
2006 S500V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 28,579 BLACK $39,000
2006 S500V 8G 4DSN A PS PB AC SR 4X2 56,607 BLACK $34,000

You can see the prices drop crazy from December Auction to Jan 2008 Auction.

I am thinking that 2005 and 2006 W220 will be more affordable later this year. 2005 and 2006 W220 are the most bug free, has much improved Airmatic system.

Depereciation of W220 is heart breaking, but this is life.

i notice that my car drops about $10K in value every year. Now that is about 5 years old it, rate of depreciation should slow down a bit.

whatever! just buy the one you want.

it's not what you are getting for your money, the cars are no better or worse.it is simply based upon the number of clients that are willing to pay $30,000 to $70,000 for a previously owned car.the rich are getting richer and the poor and middle class are becoming one.choose what side you want to be on. there are fantastic opportunities to be had. bones

As I remember, you've been looking to upgrade to upgrade to the W220 for a year or so already, but everytime you look, price drop, so you postponed your decision again. I guess if you wait long enough, price will eventually drop to zero ???

Price for all large luxury sedan drop like rock. Check out the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Jag JX, Lexus LS430. Depreciation is just as bad, if not worse, than the W220 S series. A friend of mine just pick up a 2005 LS430, Ultra Luxury package (rear massage seat with fridge and full control), for $30K !!!. Consignment car. As these car age, the cost of maintenance and service remain at very-expensive level, this is why price tank. . It's not the cost of the cars, it's the upkeep of them that could be burden for people.

I actually enjoy this type of depreciation: it allows me to buy a very decent car at very reasonable price. I am not looking for retain resale once I've bought the car, so it could depreciate all it wants. As long as I got a good deal when I buy, not when I sale, that's all matter.

Unless it's an Enzo, price of all car tank the moment you put 1 mile on the car. I could see the point of people who baby or pamper their car, for their love or passion about it. But to baby or squeeze your life to minimize mileage on it, in hope of keeping its value, is just wishful thinking.

Look at one year old Bentley or Masserati, and see how much price have tanked compared to new, you'll be shocked.

Buy a car when you can and enjoy it, they are not collectible nor investment.

Have my car for 7 months, putting 25K mile on it, a set of tire/brake, two oil changes, and I've enjoyed every bit of it. No problem whatsoever so far.

Dealers and their greed are a huge part of the problem. If they would help in sustaining values of cars, people could trade more often and the dealers would come out way ahead. As is, no one can trade because they're stuck with upside down equity for at least 4 years preventing trades. You can hide upside down equity maybe once or twice with sneaky financing, but eventually the customer is log jammed in upside down equity and can't be a repeat buyer for years.
It also makes me wonder how gap insurance companies can stay in business when someone totals a car out owing 40% more on the car than what it's worth.
And they wonder why their inventory is growing and their lots are empty of shoppers!!! The dealerships are shooting themselves in the foot. If they are so called making their 7% profit at the point of sale, then why does the car drop another 20% throughout the year? It's because the dealers drive that value down by trying to rape the customer on the next car!!!!

Prices will go down more!

Recession is here. At least in California, on my block we got 3 houses in forclosure. Dollar is very weak. Stock market is taking dump.

Please don't get happy with IRS rebate checks coming to you in May or June. This is not free money, this is your tax money. Politition from both parties along with president want you to feel good with rebate check, but don't forget this is your hard earn money that IRS is giving you back.

Zam, yes you are right I was out in market 4 months ago looking for W220. I was interested in 2004 W220 but then back of due to first year with 7 speed transmission.

I holded my green and now I can afford with same $$ 2005 W220, but look like this time I will go for my first AMG MB. I am looking at 2005 S55. I am hoping that in next 6-9 months I will be able to get a good 2005 S55.

Off Topics - Economy

The housing market is really putting lots of good folks in bad situation.

You are right the bank, the broker and CEO of big Wallstreet firm keep making money and getting rich and American middle class is crunch in this economy.

For god sake they are having foreclusure tours in California.

So you go and tour of some one dream house that went in foreclosure, it is sicking and so sad
