Why Prices of W220 keep falling
I have run into many many mercedes that have problems ranging from cosmetics to tranny/engine.

On my 2001 W210 I have issue that came with car that I will fix one of these days is the windshield washer relay is bad.
You are right about cosmetic issues, yes you see some little ding in bumper from rock and stone on freeway.
Please note that most of the car get auction in Hi Line auction are coming back from lease, you mostly get on $20000 car about $5000 less then you buy from dealer lots.
Now on economy, I feel your pain that you will not get your tax rebate. Because once you over $150000, you don't qualify for rebate. I don't consider my self upper class, I am still poor middle class working hard in Oil and Gas field kind of person.
I feel your pain. I work till 12:00 for "that group", and then hopefully between the hours of 2:00 and 5:00 I can keep the rest of my pay.

Used car biz is a tough gig, especially if you're dealing with rapidly depreciating stock such as 220's and 215's.

Sure it is.
This would be a fun car to just mod the hell out of and beat it to death without regard to resale, but as is, it isn't worth over 20k.

I wish him luck. It is a cool color with all the good options.

As for the value on the OLD s class falling it's simple. The new S class is a better car and who wants to drive the old model car anyways. Mercedes is all about prestige and there is no prestige in driving the old model, after all what does it say about you if you drive a car that anyone can afford. If it's not about that then why do people buy a 5 year old Mercedes when they could get a brand new Hyundai for less money. Wait until the new SL comes out there will be some smoking deals on the current SL body style.
I have driven the new S class and it really is a great car. In fact I think my wife is going to get one. We had a S500 back in 2000 and it wasn't such a good car. Lots of problems with quality. The new S class seems to be as good as the S class built before 2000. The other factor killing the old S class is the cost to repair in a lot of cases is way beyond the value of the car. I know where I can get a 2001 s430 for 12k that is a great car but if air bag suspension goes bad, I have a hunk of junk in my driveway because the cost to repair the car is not worth spending. This is no big deal if someone buys the car and it last 1-2 years before the bags go bad but if the bags go bad in the first month, bad news. As the cars get older and fall apart faster the buyers pool of people willing to take that risk dries up and the price of the car plummets.

Look like I will not need to wait to get my target price of $25000 for 2005 S55 till later this year, I may get it by end of Spring or mid summer.
Amazing $120,000 car will be depreciated to $25000 in 3 years.

While I love the new body style, I feel I'm still driving around in a stylish automobile with a high perceived value - that only cost me a fraction of it's original $130k sticker price.....
