Upgrade NAV Unit

I have a 2000 S500 and was wondering if it's possible to upgrade the Navigation system to a 2003 model or newer?

If it's possible, has anyone tried to do this?

Thanks

2003 is possible, 2004 or later is practically impossible (it would be very, very expensive). The 2003 would get you wide-screen, but still be CD-based. People have done it. The 2004 DVD-based COMAND uses a different fiber bus, and requires changing out every fiber consumer.

Yes, it's pretty much straight forward, since they use the same protocol. You don't even need to version code nor program it.

You will have to replace the wood for the center console, however. There're quite people who've done this, search around, you'll see it.

No it is not that easy...you have to cut some of the dash behind the woodgrain in order for it to fit. Also you need some kind of CAN bus adapter to make it work...power and audio is straightforward, but it is getting the steering wheel buttons to work that is the tricky. I bought a unit to upgrade my car..but by the time you buy the wood trim and needed wiring you aren't really gaining anything.

It would be lot of work to upgrade to the MOST base (2004 on DVD), but should be easier for 2003.

Quite a few people have done it. You can PM them and ask for more info
