I have heard varying opinions on whether it increases (or decreases!) torque due to changing the backpressure.
I have also heard that it exposes your engine to more water/road debris etc since you now have an open pipe close to the ground.

Was wondering if you had done the mod and regretted it, you have well-reasoned posts and I was hoping I could learn more about the mod since I am considering it for my S600.
Thanks!
Principally, noise. My06clk said it pretty well above, speaking for the "quiet" side of his personality.

Seeing that clip reminded me of the kids who drive the Honda Civics with the huge and very noisy exhausts - "Look at me!! See how kewl I am!!" I am not comparing the Benz to the Honda, but the message it sends about the drivers is the same. Even if the Benz in the clip wasn't a sedan.

The noise affects more than just the driver. It affects anyone within hearing range, too - especially during acceleration or at high rpm. That's just what one wants in their neighborhood, isn't it?

That's a crazy ****ing statement... Have you ever heard the STOCK exhausts on any AMG vehicle... they are significantly louder than my little mod that I did...

So then why do after market Mercedes-Benz tuners sell exhaust systems that cost thousands of dollars? I am sure that people buying a Brabus, Renntech, Lorinser or a Eisenmann exhaust are looking to increase performance but most importantly give the car better sound. I doubt any one of them is thinking something like "Look at me!! See how kewl I am!!"...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion....... I'd leave it at that. Personally, I like the understated quite effect of W220 V12 power. Though if reducing back pressure gives you a few more HP then great.

Does it increase or reduce torque???

Have done quite a bit of i-net research as well as talked with experienced tech's on this issue. No one can give an authoritive answer on whether deleting the resonator increases or decreases torque.

This must be straightforward...hasn't folks done dynos on same machine right before and after?

Would hate to get it done and get better sound but lose thrust!!

What is WOT?

AmaSeller,

WOT means "Wide Open Throttle" or Gas pedal to the floor.

Oxygen,

Thats a bit one-sided and not fair to Skylaw's statement OR opinion..

The AMG is NOT louder than removing the resonators for an exhaust system..

In Fact Does AMG exaust come without resonation? I think not. Brabus, Renntech, Lorinsor, OR Eiseman don't either for that matter...

There is a difference between a "tuned" exhaust and one that is loud just because a major component has been "deleted".

If it was simply a matter of hacking the resonators they would all be out of business and we'd all have faster cars although none of them would pass emissions inspections.

The question here is 'Have YOU heard the AMG exhaust on the S... IF you did, you would know that there is a BIG difference in the exhaust sound from inside and outside of the car so unless you have an AMG engine in your vehicle, you can't really ask that question in comparison to what you have done because it's not the same.

This is an interesting thread to say the least. To each his own but I prefer the luxury aspect of the S500 with the ponies there if I need them. As long as we don't start seeing Mercedes with fart cans out the back...

S55 amg sounds vs. de-resonated S500...

Sledge,
I agree...having had a W210 E55, am looking for a sound like that out of my W220 S600, if possible. The E55 is a great sound, muscular, throaty but not droning/fartcan/annoying...

Oxygen's video, while exciting, sounded unbelievably loud...a bit over the top IMHO...might get old...

My tech says that deleting the resonators on an S600 would sound even louder than doing it on a S500, since so much more backpressure due to turbos...

Can anyone post a video of a S55 exhaust, similar to Oxygen's, so we could compare the AMG sound and get this debate under control??

Excellent thread.

Any S55 AMG without resonators removed video?

Amaseller, thanks...the title to this video says it is a S55 with resonators removed though...

Was looking for a stock S55 amg so could compare the sound to Oxygen's S500 with resonators removed....

Appreciate any help others can provide if video is avail - thanks!

BTW checked youtube, nothing seems to pop out on this subject...

resonator do not give much gain. 1hp maybe. They are usually a straight thru muffler that you can see right thru. They are there to tone out the drone and volume.

Removed my resonator's yesterday and was kinda of dissapointed. I expected it to be louder. It did give it a deeper tone but I dont think it's louder. But it does seem to have a quicker accelaration time. Not too worried about since I only paid $40 bucks to have them removed and run a straight pipe. My friend owns an exhaust shop and I asked him if removing the mufflers would be a good idea. He said it wouldn't be since by doing so it would be too loud for this car.

What kind of power gains, if any, are you getting from removing the resonators?

its all resonance.

You gotta go with a Custom Magnaflow catback Exhaust setup like i got and do a primary cat delete with straightpipe

My car sounds better then any 55k orr 55 NA it rumbles/gurlges on WOT and on startup

cant be beat only maybe a 63 motor with resonator delete.

wow there is some bs in this thread.

Long story short, if you wanted a car with a loud growling exhaust, why didn't you buy one?

The s500 is about the last car on the planet I would want with a loud exhaust.

With the excessive soundproofing and long gear ratio's in the S-class the exhaust is hardly going to be intrusive, Oliver. He will only really hear it from inside the cabin at high engine speeds or with the windows down, which is when you will WANT to hear it.

Gets a thumbs up from me, loud when you want to hear the V8 roar, but will hardly be intrusive when doing the daily grind.

I want my luxury cars absolutely silent. In fact, if I could find a car with zero sound eminating from the exhaust, I would be happy.

I don't want to hear engine, exhaust, wind noise, tire noise, etc.

my e class is loud as hell.

I had the reonators deleted and did three inch pipe and my car is one of the sickest sounding cars around my neck of the woods.
