Looking to buy 2004-2006 S600 or S65 which is better in terms of Realibilty and Use??

I changed my mine about the S63 and am going to pick up a 2004-2006 S600 or a 204-2006 S65 AMG

What are your recommendations and how is the car treating you guys on the forums regarding its realiability and any problems you have had with it so far?

should i pick one up? because i have heard some horror stories with the 600 motors.

any help would be great

ML500 AMG pkg
Save your pennies!!!!! Items that good bad: ignition modules 3200, ignition voltage module 1800, spark plugs 600.00, crankcase passage cloggs on the right bank and they get an oil leak at the crankcase baffle in the valley of the engine which requires removing both cylinder heads to reseal. By the way none of these prices include labor!

The motor's technology is really cool but it doesn't like the poor quality fuels and oil in the US. These motors were designed for the Autobahn not city traffic with 10K mile oil change intervals. These motors use special spark plugs to measure ions in the cylinders to measure knock (there are no knock sensors insalled) they also shut off 6 cylinders while going down the highway to reduce emissions ( the cam system has the capability of disengaging the rockers so the valves don't open). It's simply to cool but expensive to maintain.

The 600 separates the men from the boys!

Active Cylinder Control was not used on the turbocharged engines, starting with 2003. Since the OP is asking about 2004-2006, this part of your discussion is not applicable.

The later models are certainly more reliable than earlier ones. The engine, in particular, seems more bullet proof. But if you are looking at late model S600s, find a Starmark and get the 7 year (from original delivery) / 100,000 mile warranty. You'll sleep a lot better.

For way less than the cost of a new S63 you can find a Starmark W220 S65. They're all 2006 models, and most have been very solid. I've got 25,000 miles on mine and nothing has ever broken. The only issue I had was a faulty nav DVD update. It was annoying that MB and Navteq didn't test the upgrade, but hardly a major problem. I just went back to the 2006 DVD until they came out with a new one that worked.

I wouldn't say it's more reliable, just not less. Late W220 problems tend to still be with things other than the drivetrain, like electrical modules and ABC. But these got much more solid by 2006 than 2000-2002, let's say.

But stuff happens, and these cars are so expensive to fix when they do break, I would never own any W220 without a factory warranty, original or Starmark.
