Yes, it was criticized for being square, but at the time, mercedes designer Bruno Sacho (spell check?) was only concerned with making the best car possible. He didn't realy care about how it looked. Anyway, at least with the W140, I felt like I was getting a lot more car for the money. With the W220, you get less car but more toys. It just depends on what you prefer.
In 2000 the W220 sold over 14000 units in the US, which is like 7 times the average yearly sales for the W140. There is no mistake about it that the new design is very popuar among the population. I just feel that I should get a little more for my money.

I agree that MB could be more conservative in body design, like Audi does. Look at new A8, it has the same boxy design but more elegant. Anyway, I think S is very good looking car, although not such classy like old S. I believe old S's shown in most of action movies as a mafia car.

It looks like a bunny... what an ugly contraption. I'm personally guessing the headlights will be slightly more rounded then the current S, and next to them will be small circular foglights/high beams/whatever. So instead of this, {>=<}, it'll be (>o=o<).

It has a MayBach look to me. IMHO, the Maybach is not really gorgeous looking. The car looks odd and already outdated to me. The Maybach buyers are buying it for prestige and to be showoffs.

Well, in the Car & Driver extremely positive review of the Maybach (say what you want about the magazine), they quote the "confidential marketing plan" as describing the typical Maybach buyer as "very mobile, highly individualistic [people who want to] demonstrate their social status. The most successful climbers...driven by conspicuous consumption." And as C&D points out, that would describe both the incredibly weathly and rap stars alike.
By the way, the article is entitled: "Pro athletes, rap singers, and Wall Street hustlers: Rejoice!"

Those are some interesting pictures, as well as some overall interesting viewpoints on the future of the S-class. I personally liked the old W140 style. I like the current style and I don't feel that it looks like the current S-class. Every manufaturer will have some sort of similar cues carried throughout it's line-up. Mercedes is no exception. If you DON'T, like the previous Cadillac generations, you have no brand identity. But, I understand wanted to separate the $35K Mercedes from the $90K. It's a fine line from creating a great car, and one that gets pulled or refaced quickly! We shall see
