Help! Have Noise coming from Dashboard
I am the original owner of a 2000 S500. I recently developed a sort of rattle in the dash that starts at about 20MPH till about 40MPH. I was thinking it might be a speedometer cable but I think it has an electronic speedo that uses sensors. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on what the problem might be and how to remove the dash cluster if I need to get back there.

Is the noise speed sensitive or is it constant? If it changes with engine RPM it may be electrical noise from a device that has lost its shielding somehow. If it doesn't change, it is probably the HVAC blower motor or squirrel cage--bearings maybe. These are all shots in the dark. Is it a mechanical noise (metal to metal) or electrical (like static)? I'm mystified about it only happening in a short range of speed. Maybe road noise masks it above 40? This isn't much help at all, but maybe your answers will give somebody else the clue they need to sort it out for you.

Does this speedo have a cable or is it electronic? How do you pull out the gauge cluster? I believe that to remove it there are 2 slats that you you put a tool in and pull it out. Is this correct? Any help is appreciated.

Did you ever figure out what this was? I am getting the same rattling noise myself. I didn't notice it before because I usually have the radio on or someone in the car. Driving it in quiet mode though I can hear the rattle as I chug along - very frustrating.
It definitely sounds like something cosmetic rather than mechanical but what do I know . Hopefully someone was able to get this resolved (warranty or not) and found the answer that might help?

I never found out what the rattle is and i still have it. I think it has something to do with the ductwork. It sounds like a piece of plastic that has come off. I just hate to start pulling off the dash.

See if the problem described at https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...ml#post3270964 sounds familiar.
