Chiptuning through SDS

Hi everyone,
This is my first post here. My name is Nenad. Some of my might remember me from Club202, Benzworld, BNZSPORT, MB shop, but it took me a few years to finally come here as well.
After a lenghty absence from wrenching on cars, I decided to pick up SDS and a few other OEM units(Volvo VIDA, BMW GT1, VW VAS, Ford/Jaguar VCM just to name few) and get reacquainted with my old trade. So I've been fooling around with SDS on my 2002 S500, played around with some adaptations on ME, and then I came across the Variant Codind section. I noticed that different regions of the world had different speed limit governors. This got me all excited and I wanted to tinker with it. I took a minute to think over any consequences I might incurr of recoding the ME, and then went for it. I recoded it from the US 210km speed limit to EURO 250km speed limit. Hit F3, recoded it. then I went into Correction Coding and noticed one extra option, FUEL. I was like WOW, could this be it? chiptuning through SDS. I could not stop there, I had to find out for sure. I entered it and saw that indeed you can set the amount of fuel for the injection. Options are BASE, SLIGHTLY ENRICH, ENRICH, LEAN OUT. I went with SLIGHTLY ENRICH. I also went into IGNITION and set the highest octane available, 93. I also reset mixture adaptation. Started the car up, went for a test drive and WOW once again. Definitely noticable torque increase, especially above 2500 rpm. I have been driving it for about a week now like this, no CEL, black smoke or any other abnormalities noticed.
I see a few of you here have SDS or access to it. I suggest you give it a try, at your own risk of course.

awesome post Nenad!

Who has SDS access and is willing to try this out in the Bay Area? I will volunteer my car to be the guinea pig.

I left out one important note, that is when coding from USA to EURO, make sure you pick the EURO spec that is closest to the USA spec your module is coded presently. For example, my unit was coded to this USA spec:
USA, Code 1, Speed limit 210km, Electric suction fan 4, [04], [00]
and I coded it to the closest matching EURO spec, which was,
EURO3/EURO4 Variable speed limit, Vehicle speed limit 250km, Electric suction fan 4 , [04], [00]
the last two numbers in brackets are VERY important, as they represent the ECU part number/model that your vehicle is equipped with, you much select a code with the matching numbers. also, the electric suction fan has two variants, since my car is equipped with a variable speed cooling fan, which is marked with code 4, that is what I was looking for as well in the EURO codes.

The FUEL control under CONTROL UNIT ADAPTATIONS does not appear with USA coding, you have to code it for EURO (maybe others , dont know) in order to enable FUEL control.
I would like to point out that for those of you in states that do smog checks, you might want to reverse the tune before doing such an inspection, as it will probably lessen your chances of passing it. also, for those of you who have trouble passing it prior to tune, you can set the mixture to LEAN, as this will help you pass the smog check easier.

just because I havent taken it above 130mph doesnt mean the car does not respond better. speed limit increase was just one part of the tune. the fuel and ignition codings do make a difference in power.

do you have a dyno graph?

butt dynos are notoriously unreliable.

Terrible idea. Leave the ME computer alone. If you want to tune your car, pay $1000 for a tune and do it the right way, not through a DIAGNOSTIC system...

Enriching the mixture through SDS...

I rather trust Mercedes pre-determined fuel table values than some indy tuners.

The fuel adaptations are for cold start, warm up and acceleration only. They are commonly used to help correct poor starting and misfires when cold. They don't really change the power output by any measureable amout.

Changing the ignition to a higher value if you have the fuel available will be benificial though. It's usually on the highest setting for most counrties already though.

no, I havent had the chance to go over 130mph, I do most of my commuting within the city. Our (Hawaiian) Highways dont help this cause much, since the highest speed limit is 60mph, and damn coppers are like on every corner, behind every bush.
As far as the fuel/timing settings go, as I said before, the car is definitely more responsive, whether the fuel setting has anything to do with it or not, it definitely responds better than before the "tune".

take your car up the H2 from Aloha stadium to the tunnel leading to Kaneohe. I took my 928S4 and M3 thru there and hit 160mph in my porsche and 135mph on the bimmer. can be done, no cops, very little traffic after 7pm. but i did not tell you to do this....

Thats very strange because I have hit about 145 in my car and could have gone more and you mention that the speed limiter is 210 km... Is that just for pre-faceliftes W220s'?

nope. my 05 stops at 130mph. either your car is tuned (doubtful on a 430) or your speedo is wildly inaccurate.
