My '03 S500 had a plug in the glovebox for an external audio source... and AUX mode was selectable via the service menu.
My '05 S600 has a plastic dummy plug in place of the audio jack in the glove box and no mention of AUX anywhere in COMAND...
Ideas?

Seriously, when the 2004s moved from D2B to MOST, the new S-class COMANDs lost the AUX input. You'd have to go to an aftermarket solution; there's no simple way to just add an input to the COMAND.

It is true that the only the 2003 has the AUX jack input. I use mined to play my iPOD via the command center. However, the only steering wheel controls that works with the ipod is the volume and the songs don't display on the nav screen. Other than that the sound is good.. However, there is nothing to charge the ipod and once the car cuts off the ipod is still running.

Any shop that deals with Mackin Industries can get them for you. I have a friend in Japan who also sends them out.

The instructions are on page 200 of your COMAND manual. If you don't have one, you can download it at http://home.earthlink.net/~phdwebsite/comand_manual.htm.
To use the AUX input: Push the SVC button, go into system settings, and select aux input. Plug your MP3/iPod into the aux jack and start up your music using the MP3/iPod controls. Your volume can be controlled by the steering wheel +/- buttons as well a the volume control of your MP3/iPod player. The sound quality is much better than any cassette adapter or FM transmitter that I have used in my other cars.
To exit, just push the CD or radio (AM/FM) buttons.

These do not work on the US-spec comand systems then, i assume? They are very common on ebay at the equivalent of around US$160. You could surely get them to work with a Euro flash of the comand if it came to it?

None of the U.S. specification DVD-based COMANDS for the W220 have an AUX input. Euro spec units do. Some W220s have had the cutout in the glove compartment, but it is covered by a plastic insert with no input behind it.
