2003 s500 - AC Off button stays on

Hi
While driving from Florida to VA over the weekend, my ac went from being ice cold, to just the AC off button being red. I cannot hit the button to turn the ac on, it stays in ECON mode. Any suggestions ? Is it Freon? Hopefully not the compressor!!

It could be a leak in the system, or just the sensor that monitors refrigerant pressure. They seem to fail often. When the low refrigerant level is detected, the compressor is locked out.
