Thanks Oliver, so basically "S" means standard not sport in 02 models.

its really just a verbiage difference. you can call it sport or standard and I doubt you would get much argument.

Either way, its mechanical purpose is the same.

Hmmm - MB seems to describe the feature arbitrarily. My '05 manual calls it "Sport" but explains that it is for "Standard driving." That they describe it differently for other model years doesn't surprise me, given the inconsistency in "W" and "C."

Be that as it may, "S" (no matter what it is called) starts the car off in first gear and upshifts at lower rpm than the other options.

"W" or "C" starts in second gear (in forward or reverse) and upshifts at higher rpm.
