03 S500 HEATED SEATS NOT WORKING
Did anyone had this problem of not having the seats heating on the bottom part? just my back rest seams to get hot my but cold all the time. every other seats are working fine since i have heated seats in the back seats too. could it be a fuse or something? SAME THING IS HAPPENING WITH MY SL500

For whatever it is worth, I have exactly the same problem. All seats work and also my back; but not the bottom heater. It seems to be a problem with a ruptured wire or bad contact. Surely this is easy to fix.
Can I fix it myself?

I had this on my W210 and W220. IIRC it was around $700 for the part on the E Class through independent mechanic. I was planning to sell the car anyway so didn't bother fixing it. On the W220 it was covered by CPO

Heating elements are low tech so we can all save $700+ if someone knows how to remove the heating element. To start with, does anyone know how to remove a seat (to turn it upside down)? As both front seats look the same in my car can I swap them?

Taking the seat out won't be tough. Don't turn the key on with the seat out or you will set off the air bag warning.
Once out the back and bottom should come apart pretty easy.
My thought from there was to take a multi tester to each part of the seat and see where the power is going or not going.
I'm betting on a broken wire where the element is connected, and probably due to the seat moving.
You are correct that the heating element is pretty simple. I've added heating elements to a couple cars and a motorcycle and it was easy. Just need to find the time
