HELP: Car's Not Starting!

Fellow enthusiasts,

I write today looking to absorb your knowledge () on an issue which just came up on my 2000 Mercedes S500....it's not starting. The general jist of it is this. Unlocked the car with the remote (so battery is functioning), opened the doors to see all the lights illuminate properly (again, battery functioning), but when I pleace the key into the ignition, it will not turn at all. I attempted to manuever the steerling wheel in case it was locked into place, but nothing. Checked the gear to make sure it was locked in PARK, and this was all okay.

As today is Sunday, and all my regular shops are closed, I cannot get an answer today, yet this will still run through my head all day. Has anybody experienced this same or similar problem? If not, does anybody have an educated guess at what the problem could be?

try cleaning your key. Sounds to me like the ignition switch may be faulty.

See post #5 at https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...-ignition.html - it is probably your EIS. The post also has a "How-to" on replacing it.

Do you have a spare key to test with. When you insert the key it is using a different circuit to the ones controlled for the locking. When used in the car, it is energized from the transponder coil on the ignition switch,,check that the red lens is clean on the end of the key, and inside the key hole.

One fault that could cause it is the brake light switch, killing the CAN signal, though the most common is the key or the ignition switch, or the EIS modual
