Smile Steering wheel woes

I've been doing lots of research on Merc over the last 6 months because my wife wants one. In fact, she wants a blue one.

I decided to get a 2003-2005 S class because, well, they are the flagship and therefore the best, right? Finding a Blue one is a bit difficult, so I was pleasantly surprised when one popped up about a half hour away at a car lot. The lot buys leased cars- one owner fleet cars leased by companies in Manhatten for their employees. This one is a 2003 S500 4matic. It has 52k miles, and is very nice.

My only concern is the steering wheel. Obviously, the previous driver only drove the car with his sweaty left hand precisely positioned at 8:00. The wheel is immaculate, except for a 4 inch splotch in the 8:00 position. The leather look terribly worn.

The interior is tan in color, and past experiences have taught me that tan leather will show wear before black or dark blue, but I'm wondering if there is a way to recondition the wheel. Has anyone any ideas on how I might fix it? I hate to buy the car if it isn't exactly how I want it, and the steering wheel is really bothering me.

Thanks!

A decent upholstery shop should be able to re-wrap the steering wheel in new color matched leather.

Thanks for the reply. Looking at your signature, we are close to one another. I am in Stamford. Do you have any suggestions to whom would do a good job in our area? Thanks again.

Go on ebay and get a new wood wheel. That's what I would do.

Is the leather destroyed or just the dye/coloring?

If it is just the dye, contact leatherique.com and give them your interior code. They can mix up a pint of their awesome leather dye and you can simply redye the whole wheel. I got a pint from them a while back and it is nearly a perfect match. The sheen is ever so slightly more matte so the parts I've done get redyed all over. If you do that, you have to search for the redone parts. It works well on hard plastic as well.
