Passenger Side Baby Detector Switch???
My 2001 S430 has some sort of switch that detects if a baby, or other lightweight object, is in the front passenger seat. I suspect it disconnects the air bag.
This switch has been detecting a phantom baby for months now. The small red light is always lit in the instrument cluster. If a person sits in the seat, the light goes out.
The dealer says the fix is a new switch, about $720. I don't want to spend my hard earned maintenance dollars on this switch.
Any suggestions? Can it be wired around?

This is just my understanding but,
Dealer told me that the airbag "baby defeat" is electronic(magnetic maybe?). There is no scale/weight sensor. You have to use a car seat that is made for a Benz and has the electronic device that trips the airbag defeat. We priced one at the dealer and quickly decided that baby in the back is safest anyway. DVD player playing "Baby Signing Time" back there does the trick. Added benefit....She could tell what she wanted/needed using sign language at 7 months. Many a horrid mess prevented.
