Smile Please Help!!! Question about 2002 S500

Hey I am looking at a 2002 S500 that is for sale but there is a problem with the car. The car doesnt go past 30mph. The seller said they had it looked at and the error code that came up is P0778 transmission code. He said that solenoid B needs to be replaced. Does anyone know if that alone could be the problem or could it just be the transmission? Also if it is the transmission does anyone have an idea of the cost?

Thanks everyone!!!

2001 S500
Cool

sorry pal cant help u wit that. may be some of our other friends may be able to help you with that. but before you buy the car make sure you
check the cost of repairing it. these things can cost a fortune sometimes.

and if u r located in california I have a s500 for sale. its a 2001 s500 blk in blk with 44k miles. and has a lots of extra features over the standard features like rain sensing wipers, head up navigation display. PM me &

goodluck with the car if u decide to buy it. I'm sure you will love driving it.

S430
S500 Tranny

Before you even consider plunking down any cash on this car, PLEASE take it to MB dealer and get a computer diagnosis. It only costs about $120 but it can save you a world of hurt. Most of the time these issues are not mechanical and can be fixed relatively inexpensively. But if the tranny itself is bad, you are looking at around $5,000 for rebuilt one...maybe $10,000 for a new one. I had a slippage problem with a 2001 S430 and the dealer fixed it for $180...now it's like new. Good luck.

For the love of humanity, if you can help it, don't buy that thing! Not even an 03! All of the Benz's from 00-06 are terrible...I am waiting on a tow truck right now to carry away this 04 Benz with hydraulic leaks. We just got it out of the shop last Wednesday...in the shop again less than a week later! Before that, misfiring...they're a nightmare. We're looking to get a W221 to replace this poor excuse of a Mercedes!

I assume you are referring to the 2004 CL600 in your profile...those are noted for their ABC hyraulic problems and misfire issues.

Did you research these forums before purchasing? If so you would have seen all of us screaming not to buy a v12 unless it has a warranty

Smile Last question:

As suggested I asked the seller if I could take the vehicle to Mercedes to run a full diagnostic test and he has agreed. My only question is if the dealer says everything is fine but something (like transmission) goes wrong with it within say 30days will the dealership cover it. Does the dealership guarantee their test and if so for how long?

THANKS, you guys may have saved me thousands and a world of trouble!!!

Well there IS something wrong with the car, it wont go over 30mph. To fix it, you will pay for more than just a diagnostic, you will have to pay for the REPAIR as well. All dealers warranty their repair work, but if it fails again due to a DIFFERENT transmission issue, they will not cover that. Their repair guarantee only extends to the work they do.

This is the way all mechanic shops operate, are you new to the US? Surely you have had your car repaired before and understand that a mechanic will not pay to fix your car if they do one repair but it needs something else soon after

That is simply an untrue statement. Maybe your car is terrible, but they ALL aren't. I have had my SL55 from new in '03 and it has been brilliant. DD, trips and track days. Plus I can't guess how many versions of software we have put in the car as we developed 55K tuning. But I 'over service' the car. Fluid/filter changes, brake fluid, coolant, etc. plugs, brakes, trans.... nothing is neglected, as a result, I love my AMG!

It all depends on the car, the owner and how well it was taken care of. However, back to the OP.... if the only problem w/the car is a relay, you have to ask yourself, "Why didn't seller buy the relay"? Take it to a dealer and have a a PPI.

I didn't see this thread and read your PPI diagnostic thread.

Avoid the car if it has any transmission issues. Benz's are not supposed to have any transmission issue at all, what did he use this car as a tow TRUCK!??
